Poker Position & Starting Hands

Every seat at a 9-max table, in acting order, with what generally justifies opening a hand from each one.

Under the Gun

UTG

First to act preflop, furthest from the button — acts with the least information.

Opening range: Tightest range at the table: premium pairs (TT+), strong broadways (AQ+), and AKo/AKs. Speculative hands like suited connectors are generally too loose this early.

UTG+1

UTG+1

One seat after UTG — still early position, still acting with very little information.

Opening range: Similar to UTG, perhaps a touch wider — add a few more suited broadways.

Middle Position

MP

The first of the 'middle' seats — more players still to act than in the cutoff/button.

Opening range: Can open a moderately wider range than early position: add suited connectors and smaller pairs.

Lojack

LJ

Two seats before the cutoff — fewer players left to act behind you than earlier positions.

Opening range: Range widens further — most suited aces and more offsuit broadways become playable.

Hijack

HJ

One seat before the cutoff — good position with only two players left to act before the blinds.

Opening range: A meaningfully wider opening range — many suited connectors and one-gappers are standard opens here.

Cutoff

CO

One seat before the button — second-best position at the table.

Opening range: Wide opening range, close to (but usually still a bit tighter than) the button's.

Button

BTN

Last to act on every postflop street — the single best seat at the table.

Opening range: The widest opening range by far — the positional advantage on every future street justifies playing many more hands.

Small Blind

SB

Posts a forced bet, acts first on every postflop street against the big blind — the worst position at the table.

Opening range: Range depends heavily on whether the pot's been raised. Unopened, some players limp or raise a wide range; facing a raise, tightens up significantly due to the positional disadvantage.

Big Blind

BB

Posts the largest forced bet, acts last preflop (a 'free' option to check if unraised).

Opening range: Gets the best preflop price of anyone at the table, so defends (calls) a wide range against a single raise, even with hands that wouldn't be opened from other seats.

FAQ

Why does position matter so much in poker?
Acting later gives you more information — you see what everyone before you does before deciding. That's why the same hand is playable from the button and unplayable from Under the Gun: the informational edge changes the math.
What's the difference between 9-max and 6-max positions?
6-max removes the earliest positions (UTG+1, MP, LJ), so ranges across the board are generally wider than in a full 9-max game — there are simply fewer players left to act behind any given raise.
Should I always play the same range from the same position?
No — this is baseline guidance, not a fixed rulebook. Stack depths, opponent tendencies, and table dynamics all shift what's actually correct in a given hand.
